Description
The Garden of Five Lions Ring – GIA Certified Panjshir Emerald brings together an extraordinary natural gemstone, the legends of Afghanistan’s rugged Hindu Kush Mountains, and the Old World craftsmanship of Silver Mountain Metals.
At the heart of this one-of-a-kind ring is a GIA Certified 0.46 carat round-cut Panjshir Emerald. This remarkable gemstone is described as a true F1 emerald with no enhancement and no fissure filling, allowing its vivid natural beauty to speak for itself.
Mined high in the rugged mountains of the Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan, Panjshir Emeralds are legendary gemstones known for their vivid bluish-green color that rivals Colombian stones. Their lore blends high-altitude myth, ancient trade routes through the Hindu Kush, and modern tales of resistance and survival.
The Valley of the Five Lions
The name Panjshir means “Five Lions,” named after the five legendary brothers who settled in the valley in the 11th century.
Surrounded by towering mountains and remote high-altitude terrain, the Valley of the Five Lions has become inseparably connected to the brilliant green gemstones hidden within its mountains.
The Winter Woodgatherers
Modern local lore says the emeralds were first exposed and discovered about a century ago by local villagers gathering brushwood for winter fuel.
While collecting wood among the mountains, villagers spotted bright green crystals glittering in the high mountain sun, revealing the extraordinary emerald treasure concealed within the Panjshir landscape.
Ancient Echoes
The story of green gemstones from this region reaches even further into history.
Early Western writers such as Pliny the Elder wrote of prized green smaragdus stones from Bactria in the first century A.D. Yet the specific high-altitude deposits of Panjshir remained an elusive local secret until modern scientific confirmation in the 1970s.
Fueling the Resistance
During the Soviet occupation in the 1980s and subsequent conflicts, the extraction and sale of Panjshir Emeralds became famously intertwined with local survival.
Profits from these brilliant green crystals helped fund local mujahideen resistance efforts, transforming the gemstones from simple adornments into physical tokens of regional independence and defiance.
The Freedom Stone
From this extraordinary chapter in the valley’s history comes another name associated with the Panjshir Emerald:
The Freedom Stone.
Its story became one not only of remarkable natural beauty, but also of independence, survival, and the resilience of the people living among the mountains from which these gemstones emerged.
Dangerous Extractions
Artisanal miners work the treacherous, freezing, high-altitude cliffs using basic hand tools and archaic methods—sometimes using reclaimed munitions as makeshift explosives—while facing the constant threat of avalanches and collapses.
The journey of a Panjshir Emerald from its hidden mountain deposit to a finished piece of fine jewelry is therefore almost as remarkable as the gemstone itself.
The Garden Within
Like other fine beryls, Panjshir Emeralds contain characteristic internal inclusions poetically known as the “Jardin,” French for “Garden.”
Gemologists use these natural characteristics to help trace the distinctive geological fingerprint of emeralds originating within the Hindu Kush.
The Jardin creates what can appear to be a miniature natural landscape within the emerald—a fitting final chapter to the story of a gemstone born among some of the world’s most dramatic mountains.
It is from this combination of the legendary Five Lions of Panjshir and the emerald’s fascinating Garden Within that this extraordinary ring receives its name:
Garden of Five Lions.
The Ring
As mystifying as the lore surrounding Panjshir Emeralds, this GIA Certified 0.46 carat round-cut emerald is an exceptional example of the gemstone.
The brilliant green center stone is mounted on our custom-designed Celtic Knot, or Infinity Knot, band handcrafted in solid 14k yellow gold. The endlessly interwoven gold complements a gemstone whose own story reaches across geology, legend, ancient history, and generations of human craftsmanship.
The result is far more than an emerald ring. It is a piece of natural history transformed into a wearable heirloom.
